A combined resident hall and library inspired by that special atmosphere found in the dense city
MY CONCLUDING BACHELOR ASSIGNMENT AT THE ROYAL DANISH ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS
APRIL - JUNE 2013
Despite being situated in the middle of Copenhagen, Amager Fælled has a sense of tranquility to it. The density of its' vegetation makes this place a place for relaxation and meditation. The dense city does the same. Every passage, every courtyard is a new, staged experience - a new spatial story. In the dense city, it is easy to let your mind wander and let your fantasy create stories.
With this in consideration, this plot will give room to a student housing dormitory related to writing, reading and studying. It is a house, where there is space to focus and reflect amidst the surrounding city's narrow streets and winding canals.
The building is a parallel universe in the center of the city. It relates to passersby across canals and through passages. Here, the inner parts of the buildings are visible: The moveable bookshelves on the ground floor and the big, central 'book-tower', whose wooden structure lights up the city and invites you inside.
The project is situated in a master plan, done in a previous assignment. Prior to the master plan, I designed a temporary installation on the same site.
Facade / The southern facade is equipped with many openable bookshelves. When the library opens, the shelves open with it, allowing for looks inside the building.
Plan, ground floor / The public ground floors connects the city streets with the water spaces.
Section / The top floor of the building houses a terrace to the south, open for the public at special occasions.
2nd & 5th floor plan. The core of the building allows light to enter all the way to the ground floor and is also the main place for circulation.
A room for a student / Furniture is an integrated part of the architecture and allows efficient use of the space.
View of a reading area / Each stair in the central atrium leads up to a common area with a view of the city.
The public ground floors connects the city streets with the water spaces.
